As the two following portraits show, Sumi is not restricted to landscapes, still lifes, or quick sketches. Of these and similar portraits Kocher says, "I love trying to capture the essence of things in as few lines as possible and the art of Sumi seems to me to be the perfect medium for this." (The original height of both portraits is 36".)
